Western Star Hood Squeak: What Western Star Drivers Need To Know
Western Star builds trucks for drivers who choose something different. The 4700, 4900, and 5700 are purpose-built machines. But they share one thing with every other Class 8 truck on the road — rubber upper hood supports that squeak when they vibrate against metal.
If you're hearing that noise, here's what's going on and what your options are.
Why Western Star Hoods Squeak
Same root cause, different truck. The rubber bumper on the upper hood support meets the metal hood receptacle. Vibration at that contact point produces squeak. It's physics, not a brand defect.
Western Star-specific factors:
The squeak is the symptom. Friction and wear at the rubber-to-metal contact point is the cause.
What Doesn't Work
Every approach that fails on other trucks fails on Western Star too:
Grease — temporary fix that attracts dirt, becomes abrasive paste, degrades rubber, and adds $200+/year in truck wash surcharges. See the [FAQ](/faq) for the real cost breakdown.
Silicone spray — 300-500 miles of relief per application. Weekly reapplication for OTR drivers. Also makes sleeve solutions incompatible due to material degradation.
Rags or generic socks — loose fabric near a turbo is a fire hazard. $8,000-$50,000+ in potential engine damage. Not worth the risk. The [FAQ](/faq) documents the fire damage costs.
Hood realignment — helps only if misalignment is the actual cause. Doesn't address rubber wear.
The Only Approach That Addresses the Root Cause
A tight-fitting, non-petroleum sleeve that creates a low-friction barrier at the exact contact point where squeak originates. The sleeve reduces the vibration between rubber and metal. No vibration, no squeak.
This is what Hood Skinz are — for select Peterbilt and Kenworth models currently. Each sleeve is purpose-built for a specific OEM bumper. The precision fit is what keeps them in place and effective.
Western Star Fitment: Not Yet — Request It
Hood Skinz do not currently make sleeves for Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700, or any Western Star model. New truck fitment requires OEM bumper measurements, durability testing in real-world conditions, and production tooling.
The [Squeaky Hood tool](/squeaky-hood) is how you request Western Star fitment. Every submission is data we use to prioritize which trucks get built next.
1. Go to [Squeaky Hood](/squeaky-hood) 2. Select Western Star as your truck make 3. Enter your model (4700, 4900, 5700, etc.) 4. Optionally record the squeak — helps us understand the frequency and conditions 5. Submit
More Western Star submissions mean Western Star moves up the priority list faster.
