Mack Anthem Hood Squeak: Why It Happens and What Helps
Mack builds tough trucks. But even the Anthem and Granite aren't immune to hood squeak. If you're hearing that chirp every time you hit a rough patch or close the hood, you're experiencing the same rubber-to-metal friction issue that affects every Class 8 truck on the road.
Here's what's going on and what your options are.
Why Mack Hoods Squeak
The Anthem, Granite, and Pinnacle all use rubber upper hood supports. The squeak originates at the contact point between that rubber bumper and the metal hood receptacle. When the rubber vibrates against metal, you hear squeak.
Mack-specific factors:
The root cause is the same as every other truck: friction and vibration at the rubber-to-metal contact point.
What Doesn't Fix It
Every driver has tried these. None of them last:
Grease — attracts dirt, creates abrasive paste, degrades rubber, and costs $200+/year in truck wash surcharges. The [FAQ](/faq) breaks down the real cost.
Silicone spray — a few hundred miles of relief, then reapply. Also makes future sleeve solutions incompatible.
Rags — fire hazard. Period. A rag on a turbo can cause $8,000-$50,000+ in damage. No savings is worth that risk.
Hood realignment — helps if the hood is actually misaligned, but doesn't address rubber wear at the contact point.
What Reduces Friction at the Contact Point
A purpose-built, tight-fitting, non-petroleum sleeve over the rubber bumper is the only approach that directly addresses the root cause. The sleeve creates a low-friction barrier at the contact point, reducing the vibration that causes squeak.
Hood Skinz produce these sleeves for select Peterbilt and Kenworth models. Each is built for a specific OEM bumper — the precision fit is what keeps them in place and effective.
Mack Fitment: Not Yet — Request It
Hood Skinz do not currently make sleeves for Mack Anthem, Granite, Pinnacle, or other Mack models. New truck fitment requires OEM bumper specs, durability testing, and production tooling.
The [Squeaky Hood tool](/squeaky-hood) is how you vote for Mack fitment. Every Mack submission increases the priority for building Mack-specific Hood Skinz.
1. Go to [Squeaky Hood](/squeaky-hood) 2. Select Mack as your truck make 3. Enter your model (Anthem, Granite, Pinnacle, etc.) 4. Optionally record the squeak 5. Submit
More Mack drivers submitting means Mack gets built sooner.
