International Truck Hood Squeak: Causes and Fixes
International LT, ProStar, and LoneStar drivers know the sound. That persistent squeak from the hood every time you hit a bump or the wind picks up. It's not unique to International — but it's common enough that drivers are searching for real solutions.
Here's what causes it and what you can do.
What Causes International Hood Squeak
Every Class 8 truck with rubber upper hood supports has the same vulnerability: the contact point between the rubber bumper and the metal hood receptacle. When rubber vibrates against metal, you get squeak.
International trucks have specific factors that contribute:
The root cause is always the same: friction and vibration at the rubber-to-metal contact point.
What Doesn't Fix It
The same failed approaches that don't work on Peterbilt and Kenworth don't work on International either:
Grease — temporary fix that attracts dirt, creates abrasive paste, degrades rubber, and adds $200+/year in truck wash surcharges. See the [FAQ](/faq) for the full breakdown.
Silicone spray — 300-500 miles of relief, then reapply. Residual silicone also makes future sleeve solutions incompatible.
Rags and generic socks — fire hazard. Loose fabric on a turbo causes $8,000-$50,000+ in engine damage. This isn't theoretical — it's documented.
Hood realignment — helps if misalignment is the cause, but doesn't address rubber wear.
The Solution: Low-Friction Barrier at the Contact Point
The only approach that addresses the root cause is a tight-fitting, non-petroleum sleeve that creates a low-friction barrier between the rubber bumper and the metal receptacle. No friction, no vibration, no squeak.
Hood Skinz currently produce sleeves for select Peterbilt and Kenworth models. Each sleeve is purpose-built for a specific OEM bumper — the tight fit is what keeps it in place and what makes it effective.
International Fitment: Not Yet
Hood Skinz do not currently make sleeves for International LT, ProStar, LoneStar, or other International models. Building fitment for a new truck model requires OEM bumper measurements, durability testing, and production tooling.
You can change this. The [Squeaky Hood tool](/squeaky-hood) is our product discovery system. Tell us your truck make and model, and we use that data to prioritize which trucks get Hood Skinz next.
More International submissions = higher priority for International fitment. It's that simple.
Go to [Squeaky Hood](/squeaky-hood), select International, and submit your model.
What To Do Now
While International fitment is pending:
The squeak won't fix itself. And grease will make it worse over time. Help us prioritize International so we can build the right solution.
