Hood Skinz
Hood Skinz
Installing Hood Skinz takes about three minutes. No tools, no drilling, no adhesive, no modifications to your truck. If you can open your hood, you can install Hood Skinz. Here's the complete guide.
What You Need Before Installing
Before you start, confirm you have the right product for your truck.
Original and HD lines fit Peterbilt 365, 367, 378, 379, 384, 386, 388, and 389 using OEM 13-04711 bumper.
KW line fits Kenworth W900, T800, T660, T600, and T2000 using OEM K179-528 bumper.
If your truck isn't listed, don't force a fit. Visit the [Squeaky Hood](/squeaky-hood) tool to request your model — we build new fitments based on driver demand. The [Hood Skinz review](/blog/hood-skinz-review) covers what drivers actually say about performance and durability after installing, and our [comparison guide](/blog/hood-skinz-vs-hood-socks-vs-grease) breaks down how Hood Skinz stack up against grease and generic hood socks.
Step 1: Inspect Your Hood Supports
Open the hood and examine the rubber upper hood support bumpers. Look for:
If the bumpers are intact but just hardened and squeaking, you're good to proceed. The [best practices guide](/best-practices) covers pre-installation inspection in detail.
Step 2: Clean the Contact Surfaces
This step is critical. If you skip it, the Hood Skinz may not perform correctly and the 45-day squeak-free guarantee may be voided.
1. Remove all grease, silicone, petroleum products, and road grime from the rubber bumper and the metal hood receptacle 2. Wipe both surfaces completely dry 3. Inspect for any remaining residue — the surfaces must be clean and dry
Important: Silicone spray degrades Hood Skinz material on contact. If you've used silicone spray in the past, clean the area thoroughly until zero residue remains. Any residual silicone will break down the poly/spandex or neoprene and void the guarantee. See the [FAQ](/faq) for more on material compatibility.
Step 3: Install the Hood Skinz
1. Open the hood fully and secure it 2. Take one Hood Skinz sleeve and orient it so the opening faces the top of the bumper 3. Stretch the sleeve over the rubber bumper — start at one end and work it over the bumper like pulling on a sock. The poly/spandex and neoprene material stretches to conform to the bumper shape 4. Seat the sleeve fully — make sure it covers the entire contact surface with no gaps, wrinkles, or folds 5. Repeat on the other side
The tight fit is intentional. It's what keeps Hood Skinz in place under constant vibration. A loose sleeve is a sleeve that can migrate — and that defeats the purpose.
Step 4: Verify the Installation
1. Lower the hood slowly and observe the contact point 2. Listen — the squeak should be gone instantly 3. Check operation — open and close the hood a few times. Confirm the Hood Skinz haven't shifted 4. Inspect from the cab — with the hood closed, verify there's no visible gap between the bumper and receptacle
If the squeak persists, check the [FAQ](/faq) for troubleshooting. The most common issue is residual lubricant on the contact surfaces — clean again and re-verify.
Common Installation Mistakes
Installing over grease or silicone. This is the number one cause of poor performance. The Hood Skinz material cannot grip properly on a lubricated surface, and silicone chemically degrades the fabric. Clean and dry — no exceptions.
Partial coverage. If the sleeve doesn't fully cover the contact point, the uncovered rubber will still squeak. Make sure the sleeve extends past the contact area on both sides.
Installing on damaged bumpers. Hood Skinz reduce friction on the bumper surface. They don't fix structural damage. A cracked or split rubber bumper needs replacement before Hood Skinz will perform as intended.
Stretching the sleeve too far. The material is designed to stretch to fit the bumper. Over-stretching beyond the bumper diameter can thin the fabric and reduce durability. If the sleeve is significantly larger than your bumper, you may have the wrong fitment.
Which Hood Skinz Line Is Right for Your Install
Original — poly/spandex blend, 10 colors, $34.99 featured / $39.99 core. Standard choice for Peterbilt hoods in decent condition.
HD — neoprene, roughly 2x thicker than Original, 3 colors, $49.99. For drivers who access the hood frequently or run rough roads. The thicker neoprene handles more abuse per pair.
KW — poly/spandex blend, Kenworth-specific fit for K179-528 bumper, 3 colors, $29.99. Purpose-built for Kenworth W900, T800, T660, T600, T2000.
All three lines install the same way and carry the same 45-day squeak-free guarantee.
After Installation: Maintenance
Hood Skinz are consumable armor. They wear out. When the squeak returns, replace them. Most drivers budget for 3-4 pairs per year depending on conditions. Our [grease vs sleeve comparison](/blog/hood-squeak-grease-vs-sleeve) explains why this is cheaper annually than using grease.
